About BRDL
BRDL is an exciting and unique version of Wordle designed specifically for bird lovers. In this game, players have to guess the four-letter banding codes used by scientists to abbreviate bird species names. Unlike traditional Wordle, the mystery word in BRDL doesn't have to be five letters long, adding a new challenge for Wordle fans who are also bird enthusiasts. The game was created by Alex Tomilson, a well-known graphic designer.
How to play
- Players in BRDL must recognize the four-letter banding codes used to condense the names of several bird species. The official Bird Banding Laboratory created these codes, which adhere to strict guidelines for the abbreviation of bird species names.
- Bird Species with One-Word Names: For bird species with one-word names, the code is just the name's first four letters. For instance, "BOBOLINK" can be simplified to "BOBO," and "OSPREY" can be written as "OSPR."
- Two-Word Bird Names: The first two letters of each word are utilized in the code for two-word bird names. As an illustration, "MOURNING DOVE" is shortened to "MODO," while "GREAT EGRET" is shortened to "GREG."
- Three-Word Bird Names: If the name of a bird species consists of three words, the first letter of each of the first two words and the first two letters of the third word are combined to generate the code. For instance, "GREAT BLUE HERON" is condensed to "GBHE," while "CLAY-COLORED SPARROW" becomes "CCSP."
- Bird Names with Hyphens: If a three-word bird name has a hyphen, the first two letters of the first name and the first letter of each second name are combined to form the code. As an illustration, "FLORIDA SCRUB-JAY" is shortened to "FLSJ."
- Four-Word Bird Names: Even if there is a hyphen in the middle of a four-word name, the initial letter of each word is used to create the code for four-word bird names. For instance, "EASTERN WHIP-POOR-WILL" becomes "EWPW," while "GRAY-CROWNED ROSY-FINCH" is shortened to "GCRF."
- Word game challenge: For both fans of birds and word games, BRDL delivers a fresh and difficult word puzzle experience. Players can have fun playing online using tips and guesses to learn the names of the various bird species.
